On his return from the Third Crusade , Richard was caught in a terrible storm that threatened to swallow his ship. In a moment of despair, he vowed that if he survived, he would build a church on the first land he touched. The storm subsided, and Richard found shelter on the shores of Lokrum . He kept his promise, but at the urging of the citizens of Dubrovnik, the church was built within the city walls – leaving a lasting mark on the city’s history.
